Arnos Park was created in 1928 out of 44 acres of wood and meadow which were bought by Southgate Urban District Council. Today the park is a great open space with the Pymmes Brook flowing through, ample park benches for taking a break and many pathways for walking or jogging.
Arnos Grove Tube Station is situated on the Piccadilly Line, whose tracks cut through the park on a large brick viaduct containing 33 arches. The trains can be seen crossing the viaduct and kids love to play hide and seek in the arches themselves. Other facilities available are a children’s playground, bowling green, cricket/football pitches, a putting green and tennis courts.
In 2008/09 Boris Johnson, the London Mayor, launched a campaign offering £400,000 to be awarded to a London park which could benefit from the grant. Arnos Park was one of 47 parks to enter the contest, a hard fought campaign was launched in the borough with leafleting, door to door canvassing and internet campaigns however the park came a close third in the North London category. As a result attention has been given to the children’s playground which will soon be getting a much needed make over.
