The owners of a mid-terraced house in Bromley by Bow wanted to undertake a side-infill extension which would affect 2 neighbours. They approached Matthew Price of Peter Barry to act for them and serve notice, and it was agreed that the best strategy would be for the party wall notices to be hand delivered to the adjoining owner who was most affected, to provide an opportunity to run through the proposals in more detail.

Adjoining owners who receive notices can appoint a separate surveyor to act for them, at the cost of the building owner. This can more than double the cost to the building owner and extends the time required. We have found that investing more time at the outset, we can strategise how to minimise the chances of this happening. In this situation the adjoining owner appointed Matthew as the Agreed Surveyor and the resulting award was served within a further 3 weeks. The second adjoining owner who, was less affected by the extension, consented.

About Bromley by Bow

If you travel a little to the south of Bow, you reach Bromley-by-Bow, which is also in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. If you go east, you will reach West Ham and All Saints and Blackwall are to the south.

Bromley-by-Bow is a typical inner city area with lots of high-rise council housing and a dense level of residential areas. It has traditionally been a low-income area with a high level of unemployment. However, Bromley-by-Bow is also at the forefront of integrated healthcare, with the Bromley-by-Bow Centre offering a wide range of health and childcare facilities under one roof.

Bromley-by-Bow underground station is in zone 2/3 and is on the Hammersmith & City and District lines, offering frequent and fast service into central London. Local buses also provide further transport in and around the immediate area.

There are also a number of bus routes operating between Chingford and other areas of east London, whilst the North Circular offers road access to other parts of London.

I was a neighbour of someone who wanted to do some changes to their dormer into a full loft conversion. The surveyor sent to review our shared walls was very young professional and helped answer all my questions and concerns. The emails from the firm were very formal, else and they were very reachable by telephone. I didn’t pay as my neighbour was carrying out the works so I can’t comment there. I would consider using this firm for further works personally
