Recent Activity in Limehouse E14

We have recently been asked to act for the adjoining owners in a party wall case in E14, just north of Limehouse. This was allocated to William Weaver as it is an unusual case involving an undeveloped plot of land between two Victorian houses. The proposal is to excavate a basement and construct a house on the site. The site is very tight and the adjoining owners are concerned about the potential for damage to their properties.

William explained that the first issue is to carefully establish ownerships and boundary lines. These matters aren’t always easy to determine. The next major hurdle is to establish the construction method, in particular the temporary works.

William works regularly with advising engineers who can interpret geotechnical reports and advise on the assumptions made by the design engineers and with building owners’ surveyors to agree any necessary security sums (money to be held in escrow).

About Limehouse

Lying just north of the Thames between Wapping and Poplar, is the former Docklands area of Limehouse. The area was the location of the original Chinatown – between 1880s and the 1960s there were several restaurants serving the local Chinese community. The association lives on in local road names such as Ming Street and Canton Street.

These days the area is perhaps best known for the Limehouse Basin – originally a dock but now a marina and the gateway between to a vast canal system. Alongside the Basin you’ll find the Accumulator Tower which was built in 1869 to assist with unloading cargo by means of hydraulic power. The tower contained a huge weight which would force water through pipes to power cranes and the lock gates.

Located just south of the marina at 44 Narrow Street, is a gastropub run by Gordon Ramsey, formally called ‘The Narrow’ but now known as the Bread Street Kitchen. The building is a former dockmaster’s and customs house and is Grade II listed.

Limehouse DLR station is a short walk to the west of Limehouse Basin with trains to Bank and Tower Hill.
