Central London houses some of the most beautiful squares in the country. Berkeley Square in Mayfair was constructed in the mid-18th century by the Architect William Kent and is the subject of the famous war time song by Vera Lynn. Belgrave Square in Belgravia was laid out by the property contractor Thomas Cubitt in the 1820s and Cavendish Square, where building works commenced in 1717, links the two main shopping thoroughfares of Oxford Street and Regent Street.
If you prefer something in the more modern style, the 3 tower blocks on the Barbican Estate, built in the 1960s, may be for you – most of the 42 storeys provide spectacular views across the Capital. Alternatively, there are scores of modern apartment blocks located along the banks of the Thames in the south-west London areas of Fulham, Wandsworth and Putney.
Some of the country’s most famous museums and galleries are also located in Central London including the Victoria and Albert Museum in Knightsbridge, the Natural History Museum in Kensington and the Tate Modern which is located in the former Bankside Power Station in Southwark.
Central London has some of the best transport links in the world. You’re rarely more than a couple of minutes’ walk away from an Underground Station and there are literally hundreds of bus routes passing through. If travelling further afield, London is also the main hub for the overground rail network with HS2, which will cut the travel time to Birmingham, due to be operational some time between 2029 and 2033.
