Building owners regularly try to keep costs down by trying to agree with their neighbours that they only appoint a single “agreed” surveyor rather than have two or more surveyors involved. An appointed party wall surveyor has a duty to act independently so in most cases it is entirely appropriate for the neighbours to agree to share a surveyor.

This situation occurred in a recent case in Hanwell W7. The building owner wished to demolish an old conservatory and build a new rear extension in its place but was working on a tight budget. One neighbour wanted to have a proper record of the works but didn’t want to cause excess costs for the building owner.

As the work was quite simple, one neighbour consented so there was no need for a surveyor to be appointed at all and the other adjoining owner concurred in the appointment of our surveyor William Weaver as agreed surveyor.
