The owners of a mid-terraced house in Bromley by Bow wanted to undertake a side-infill extension which would affect 2 neighbours. They approached Matthew Price of Peter Barry to act for them and serve notice, and it was agreed that the best strategy would be for the party wall notices to be hand delivered to the adjoining owner who was most affected, to provide an opportunity to run through the proposals in more detail.
Adjoining owners who receive notices can appoint a separate surveyor to act for them, at the cost of the building owner. This can more than double the cost to the building owner and extends the time required. We have found that investing more time at the outset, we can strategise how to minimise the chances of this happening. In this situation the adjoining owner appointed Matthew as the Agreed Surveyor and the resulting award was served within a further 3 weeks. The second adjoining owner who, was less affected by the extension, consented.
